In February 2021, the Ethical Journalism Network (EJN) was awarded funding from @josephrowntree, through its Power and Accountability Programme, to fund a project to identify and begin to address structural racism in UK journalism. The resulting policy report, Structural racism in UK newsrooms", was published on 28th March 2023 and provides an overview of the challenges that Black journalists are facing in the British news media. The report, written by Dr Aida Al-Kaisy and based on 27 in-depth interviews with Black journalists and stakeholders who have or are currently working in national mainstream media newsrooms across print, online and broadcast media, provides an overview of the challenges that Black journalists are facing in the British news media. The EJN's report, “Structural racism in UK newsrooms”, was launched on 27th March with a panel discussion hosted by the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity @mybcu and @TheFilmandTVCharity. Chaired by Marcus Ryder MBE, the panel included Keme Nzerem (News anchor/presenter at @Channel4News & EJN trustee), Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff (Managing Editor, @skindeepmedia472), Rozina Breen (CEO of @TheBureauInvestigates and Dr Aida Al-Kaisy (author of the report). The EJN is grateful for the support of the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity @mybcu and @TheFilmandTVCharity for hosting the launch, @cityuniversitylondon's Department of Journalism and @centreformediamonitoring9560 for their support on the content analysis piece of the report, and @ICFJournalists for their help with the secure and effective transcription of interviews.
