The Half-Life: Alyx team talks player locomotion in a behind-the-scenes deep dive. Valve developers Jason Mitchell, Luke Nalker, Greg Coomer, and Roland Shaw share some of our early prototypes, and walk through user interface, audio, and player movement discoveries that led to the game's final designs. Half-Life: Alyx is now available on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/546560/HalfLife_Alyx/ http://half-life.com

@Lishak4294 years ago I really love how I can hear Alyx's clothes making sounds as I was waving my arms around. That just adds so much. It just makes me feel that I have a whole body and not just "floating hands". And the moving sounds and drops snd jumps are excelent! Good job, guys! ... 348

@zyker21564 years ago This is terrific work Valve, I used to absolutely love how you made commentaries on how your games are made back in the ol' days. I'm looking forward to more of them and hope that down the line you'll add them in-game to Alyx, just like you did with Ep.2, Portal 1/2 and Team Fortress 2. They really give us a sense of the passion and care that went in the game and it's a feeling we rarely get today. ... 251

@beraulgd36624 years ago The locomotion is very good. It makes it really fun to apply on-prop-standing knowledge in VR. I just throw a propane tank, move onto it mid air, and then just stay in the air while propane tank falls. I do this about 20 times and I’m flying! ... 4

@cmattss44 years ago Man game designers have to think about so much, I didn’t even consider how awesome the sound of your feet during teleports is in this game. Playing this game feels real so I don’t even notice a lot of the “game details” like I would in a pc game. I don’t notice the sound of my feet because I don’t in real life either. ... 99

@mackan0723 years ago I love that player height is an aspect of this. As a 2 meter tall guy, many VR experiences feel 'off' - because it's built for smaller people. It's fairly uncanny and can make the scale of things become absurd, and almost comical at times - even though the game is intended to be serious. ... 3

@DailyMusic2 years ago Playing HL:Alyx in VR is incredible, it's pure fun. I'd buy a VR set second time if I knew I could play Alyx. People complaining about not being able to play the game on PC just don't realize what they're missing. ... 2

@jooperino4 years ago I played through continuous motion on my first run of the game then shift teleport on my second. Surprisingly I actually found my second run (the shift teleport run) to be alot more enjoyable and immersive in a spacious room scale setting. I actually found myself moving alot more physically in real life because I'd actually make the small movements irl such as side stepping or approaching objects, rather than simply adjusting my ingame position constantly with a joystick like a traditional FPS. ... 75

@adxo4 years ago you know it's a realistic game when she reaches to get her hair out of her face by instincts 172
  • @
@JamesEvansTheGreat4 years ago The best thing about the locomotion in this game is that you can do both continuous and teleport. I have it set to shift locomotion, but the left stick still will do continuous. It's a little thing but it makes a huge difference. I probably wouldn't feel ok doing continuous all the time, but it's really nice to have it as an option during fights or to make fine adjustments. ... 1

@GusMashensic4 years ago The solid Blink Teleporting system in this game saved me from getting dizzy and allowed me to play for much longer than normal.
The only thing that really stopped me was fatigue which is something I never experienced in VR...usually I feel dizzy before I get there.
Great job on the whole game. Half Life Alyx is my favorite title I've played in the last several years!
